Ieri usciva il comunicato stampa dell’ETH:
In February 2017, allegations made by several doctoral students about a female ETH professor were brought to the attention of the Executive Board by the ombudspersons and by other ETH employees. According to these allegations, the professor was supposed to have demonstrated inept management conduct towards many of her doctoral students. […]
In hindsight, the personnel set-up at the Institute for Astronomy was not ideal, as both the professor in question and her husband were employed as professors in the same institute. As a result, the Institute for Astronomy was closed in August, the married couple’s tenure continued as separate professorships, and the rest of the disbanded institute was integrated into the new Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics.
Having identified the problematic circumstances, the priority was to reform the inappropriate personnel structure as quickly as possible so as to rectify the situation. The married professors were first appointed back in 2002. Nowadays such a pairing within the same institute would no longer be possible. […] The university’s supervisory body, the ETH Board, has also looked into what happened with the Institute for Astronomy. In September it commended the prompt and appropriate action taken by the university, as well as the remedial measures.
Troppo tardi, secondo la NZZ, perché il bullismo della pluripremiata prof è andato avanti per dieci anni senza che l’amministrazione ci badasse; troppo poco perché non ci sarà alcun licenziamento, ma un sostegno psicologico e una supervisione se le venisse di nuovo affidata la formazione di dottorandi. Stranamente, lei diceva
mi entusiasma poter condividere la mia passione per lo studio dell’universo con le generazioni più giovani di potenziali Astronomi che incontro nelle mie lezioni di Astrofisica… Il mio desiderio è di poter contribuire a sviluppare e sostenere un clima di apertura, inclusività e rispetto sia nella comunità scientifica in cui lavoro, sia più in generale nella vita quotidiano.

Vale la pena sopportare i soprusi perché dopo almeno non si restava precari per decenni? Risponde l’editoriale di Nature:
For our Careers section this week, Nature surveyed more than 5,700 early-career scientists worldwide who are working on PhDs. Three-quarters of them, they told us, think it’s likely that they will pursue an academic career…
Così pensano, ma
Global figures are hard to come by, but only three or four in every hundred PhD students in the United Kingdom will land a permanent staff position at a university. It’s only a little better in the United States.
Il sondaggio riguarda anche l’ansia dei dottorandi e il comportamento dei loro supervisori…

Anticipato on-line e accettato per la pubblicazione in meno di due settimane, dev’essere un record, c’è un altro paper del gruppo di David Liu al Broad Institute MIT-Harvard: correggono “errori” del genoma una base per volta con una nuova “piattaforma” per la tecnica CRISPR-Cas9, l’Adenine Base Editor, una “chirurgia chimica” molto più precisa delle precedenti, rif, anche Science, il Guardian e il com. stampa del Broad.
Altro brevetto da aggiungere a quelli del Broad per l’applicazione della tecnica nelle cellule umane, alcuni dei quali difesi nel corso un processo poco edificante.
