Su Scientometrics<\/em>, uscir\u00e0 un paper <\/a>sui “fringuelli di Darwin” (fonte dell’immagine<\/a>) che non sono suoi, nel senso che in realt\u00e0 sono stati chiamati cos\u00ec da David Lack che li aveva studiati cent’anni dopo il viaggio sul Beagle.<\/p>\n

Werner Marx e Lutz Bornmann del Max Planck li hanno usati per mostrare come funziona un loro sistema di data mining, che hanno battezzato “spettroscopia dell’anno di pubblicazione di riferimento” detto RPYS dall’acronimo inglese:<\/p>\n

The origin of the term \u201cDarwin finches\u201d was taken as a case study to point out the potential of the RPYS method to investigate scientific legends. We have selected the literature on \u201cDarwin finches\u201d and \u00a0have applied RPYS to identify possible publications as the origin of this legend which has spread out into \u00a0the scientific literature and beyond. We have shown that the book by David Lack published in 1947 [Darwin\u2019s Finches, <\/em>ndr] is by far the most-highly-cited pre-1960 reference cited since 1974 within the relevant literature. \nAs illustrated by our example, one ends up with the paper \u00a0that popularized the concept (here: the legend) under study, not necessarily the paper that introduced the concept. If everyone has forgotten the original source of a concept, then only careful historical analysis can reveal the true origin.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gli autori sono andati sul sicuro partendo da “The legend of Darwin\u2019s finches<\/a>” di Frank Sulloway uscito su Nature<\/em> nel 1983, l’utilit\u00e0 della RPYS non mi pare dimostrata.<\/p>\n
