Riguarda la <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2014\/05\/29\/1402786111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maggiore letalit\u00e0<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0degli uragani con un nome femminile. Motivo: fanno meno paura di quelli con un nome maschile e la gente crede meno alla necessit\u00e0 di mettersi al riparo. Morale: la maggioranza delle vittime si pu\u00f2 evitare con nomi maschili. Il tutto accompagnato dal <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2014-06\/uoia-shw052814.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">com. stampa<\/a><\/strong> ideale per essere ricopiato con poche varianti: gli stereotipi sessuali garantivano che non fosse cestinato.<\/p>\n<p>Per dirla con Jeremy Freese:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The effect sizes implied by the model are astonishing.<\/strong> The example the authors themselves give in the paper is that if a hurricane named Eloise killed 42 people, the same hurricane named Charley would be predicted to only kill 15. If \u00a0it&#8217;s professionally done. Ideas might initially seem crazy but then prove to be viable and potentially an important breakthrough. But as I said, the research must be professionally implemented, be under the researcher&#8217;s control etc.. In the Rossi affair, it is not obvious from the start that it is crazy and could never work. The problem is that Rossi remains in full control. He controls how much the people involved are told, modify the conditions of scheduled tests etc.. This means that it is not research anymore, the scientists who venture into this mess become Rossi&#8217;s marketing tools. When (and if!) they realize it, it may be too late and they resort to various defense mechanisms to justify what they have done.
