Attualmente la Thailandia non \u00e8 un paese democratico e come in Italia i titoli accademici hanno “valore legale”. Nel 2008 Supachai Lorlowhakarn, il direttore dell’Agenzia nazionale per l’innovazione – il garante per la propriet\u00e0 intellettuale! – aveva ottenuto un dottorato dall’universit\u00e0 Chulalongkorn di Bangkok, nonostante la sua tesi fosse un copia-incolla di un rapporto per conto dell’ente thailandese per il commercio e altri studi gi\u00e0 pubblicati.<\/p>\n

L’universit\u00e0 era stata avvisata da Wyn Ellis, un autore del rapporto che ora\u00a0coordina la\u00a0Sustainable Rice Platform<\/a> dell’Onu.\u00a0Dopo un’indagine interna, nel 2012 revocava il dottorato e\u00a0Supachai si dimetteva. La settimana scorsa per\u00f2, Wyn Ellis\u00a0\u00e8 stato arrestato al suo arrivo all’aeroporto di Bangkok. Come spiega a Retraction Watch<\/p>\n

My detention last week at Bangkok International Airport was instigated by a letter from Thailand\u2019s National Innovation Agency (headed by Supachai) to the Immigration Department on 1 December 2009. The letter requested I be blacklisted as a \u201cdanger to Thai society.\u201d However, I only became aware of this last Thursday on presentation of my UK passport at Thai Immigration.\u00a0 At my request, the new NIA Director, Dr Pun-Arj Chairatana, immediately issued a letter retracting the original complaint, but the authorities were unable to act to remove my name from the blacklist and release me until\u00a09 pm\u00a0yesterday.<\/em>(…)<\/p>\n

Negli USA, il Primo emendamento della costituzione difende la libert\u00e0 di parola e di stampa contro le ingerenze del governo e nell’interesse pubblico , ma certi tribunali difendono di pi\u00f9 gli interessi aziendali, cos\u00ec per decenni i produttori di sigarette hanno intentato processi ai whistle-blowers e li hanno vinti, mandando in bancarotta giornali per i quali le condanne definitive di Big Tobacco sono arrivate troppo tardi.<\/p>\n

E’ la strategia usata da Amgen nella speranza di far chiudere The Cancer Letter, <\/em>accusando il giornalista Paul Goldberg di aver fatto crollare il valore delle sue azioni, per poi chiedere un risarcimento. Scrive Goldberg<\/a><\/p>\n

The XMASS (Xenon detector for weakly interacting MASSive particles) experiment in Kamioka, Japan, involving Kavli IPMU (Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe) Project Professor Yoichiro Suzuki, spent 16 months taking data using the XMASS detector. A dark matter model independent analysis found a weak modulation effect, but researchers say this could be explained by background fluctuation. In the model dependent analysis assuming standard WIMPs, researchers constrained the deposited energy spectrum to the expected WIMP recoil signal, but found their results differed significantly from those found in the DAMA\/LIBRA experiment.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
