The gene drive didn&#8217;t work as well when started in female transgenic mosquitoes. Also, the protein Cas9 used in the gene editing technology can be toxic to mosquitoes, so the team had to tweak where in the insects it was made, and how much, to improve the survival rates of the offspring. Still, the strategy clearly works. \u201cIt\u2019s a really big deal,\u201d Besanksy says. &#8220;It\u2019s not just a gene drive system. It\u2019s a gene drive system that carries the antiparasite genes.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve got all the pieces,\u201d James adds. \u201cIt\u2019s a question of [making] a product that people will want.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And that is the big if. James, Bier, and their colleagues adequately addressed concerns about accidental releases of the transgenic mosquitoes, say several outside researchers contacted by\u00a0Science. The insectaries were behind five sets of doors, and they used a mosquito that doesn\u2019t survive in California, should it manage to escape.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But before such work continues, says evolutionary engineer Kevin Esvelt from Harvard University, biologists should look at the ecological effects of gene-driven changes, make sure the changes are stable over many generations, and develop a way to counter or get rid of the gene drive if problems arise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/17\/Medfly-USDA-k8898-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gene drives&#8221; in senso stretto ancora non ci sono stati, ma dopo esperimenti pilota della <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxitec.com\/oxitec-video\/more-on-the-science-how-does-oxitec-make-genetically-modified-mosquitoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxitec<\/a><\/strong> nelle Cayman e a Panama,\u00a0in Brasile per esempio sono state rilasciati maschi di zanzare\u00a0gm la cui discendenza muore prima di riprodursi, per fermare la trasmissione<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0003864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u00a0della dengue<\/strong><\/a>. E il dipartimento dell&#8217;agricoltura della Western Australia ha<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-11-24\/gm-medfly-control-western-australia\/6970276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> appena annunciato<\/a><\/strong> un esperimento in serra con maschi di mosca mediterranea della frutta (medfly:\u00a0<i>Ceratitis capitata<\/i>) ingegnerizzati allo stesso modo, sempre dalla <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxitec.com\/agriculture\/our-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxitec<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ogni tanto racconto di <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/oggiscienza.it\/2015\/11\/09\/cambiamento-climatico-bufale\/\">pseudoscienza <\/a><\/strong>basata sull&#8217;indebolimento del campo geomagnetico, nel frattempo la ricerca vera prosegue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sui <em>PNAS<\/em> oggi <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/11\/18\/1505450112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huapei Wang et al.<\/a> <\/strong>scrivono che l&#8217;indebolimento in corso da circa 40 anni non prelude affatto a un ribaltamento con catastrofi in serie per sistemi di comunicazione e navigazione di umani e non. Hanno calcolato l&#8217;intensit\u00e0 del campo registrato nella lava delle Gal\u00e1pagos per 5 milioni di anni, comparandola con quella misurata in Antartide, l&#8217;unica altra serie di dati &#8220;robusti&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In passato, l&#8217;intensit\u00e0 era\u00a0inferiore del 60% circa al valore attuale. Da quanto ne so, i colleghi hanno spiegato e rispiegato a Wadhams (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/earth\/environment\/globalwarming\/11762680\/Three-scientists-investigating-melting-Arctic-ice-may-have-been-assassinated-professor-claims.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">un po&#8217; fuori di testa<\/a><\/strong>) gli errori del suo modello, e ci sono stati articoli molto critici, per es. di <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/grantome.com\/grant\/NSF\/EAR-0403862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Archer<\/a> <\/strong>su Real Climate<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, ma &#8211; hackeraggio in coincidenza con la COP21? No &#8211; per ora il sito \u00e8 mezzo\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/realclimate-backup.org\/index.php\/archives\/2015\/11\/reports-of-our-demise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disattivato<\/a>&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Comunque modelli meno contestati lo smentiscono.
