Despite my zealot efforts, my friends and colleagues have not lost their jobs. The GDP devoted to health care is increasing, spurious trials, and even more spurious meta-analyses are published at a geometrically increasing pace, conflicted guidelines are more influential than ever, spurious risk factors are alive and well, quacks have become even more obnoxious, and approximately 85% of biomedical research is wasted.\u00a0<\/em><em>I still enjoy science tremendously, focusing on ideas, rigorous methods, strong mathematics and statistics, working on my weird (and probably biased) writings alternating with even more desperate poetry, and learning from young, talented people. But I am also still fantasizing of some place where the practice of medicine can still be undeniably helpful to human beings and society at large. Does it have to be a very remote place in northern Canada close to the Arctic? Or in some isolated beautiful Greek island where corpses of unfortunate refugees are found on the beach or floating in the water almost every day, as I am writing this commentary, although no naval battle has been fought? Is there still a place for rational thinking and for evidence to help humans? Sadly, you cannot answer me any longer, but I hope that we should not have to escape to the most distant recesses of geography or imagination. Se non ricordo male, <em>Cell<\/em> ha fatto eccezione solo per l&#8217;emergenza Zika &#8211; alcuni lab, come quello di <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dho_lab\/status\/699046126473895936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dave O&#8217;Connor<\/a><\/strong>, non hanno aspettato l&#8217;autorizzazione.<\/p>\n<p>Quante rondini ci vorranno ancora prima che i comitati di valutazione smettano di usare l&#8217;impact factor di una rivista per giudicare un ricercatore?\u00a0Avevo raccontato di <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascb.org\/dora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DORA<\/a><\/strong>, la dichiarazione di San Francisco sulla valutazione della ricerca, ma \u00e8 stata firmata da circa 12.000 persone. Tutti scontenti del sistema di valutazione, e all&#8217;85% contrari a limitare la pubblicazione immediata ai soli dati sul virus Zika.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>sondaggio ASAPbio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/Cb_GTGgXEAEgXW_.png\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nPer\u00f2 anche l&#8217;open access era partito con quattro gatti, per\u00f2 l&#8217;anno scorso su bioRXiv sono stati messi 2.048 papers &#8211; su oltre 1 milione usciti nelle riviste, fanno ridere, ma sono pi\u00f9 del doppio rispetto a un anno prima. E rispetto al 2013, non ne parlano solo le riviste scientifiche, ma anche il <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/ticker\/is-scientific-publishing-about-to-be-disrupted-asapbio-briefly-explained\/109494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, il<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/occams-corner\/2016\/feb\/16\/zika-virus-scientific-publishing-malady\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, il <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/16\/science\/asap-bio-biologists-published-to-the-internet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, l&#8217;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/science-and-technology\/21694990-old-fashioned-ways-reporting-new-discoveries-are-holding-back-medical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Economist<\/em><\/a><\/strong> &#8211; com&#8217;era successo con la &#8220;crisi della replicabilit\u00e0&#8221;, sette anni dopo l&#8217;articolo di Ioannidis. While few funding agencies consider preprints to be formally published work, some have at least made tentative moves towards assessing a scientist\u2019s research more broadly. Medical research groups in America, Britain and Australia, for example, have emphasised that scientific work will be judged by its quality, not by the reputation of the journal it is published in. That will certainly be more onerous for committees than counting up the \u201cright\u201d sort of papers. But if more researchers feel comfortable about uploading their work to preprint servers, it will break the stranglehold of elite journals on biomedical science and accelerate discovery. That would save millions of dollars. More importantly, it would save lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Paymasters vs researchers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nel 2011 l&#8217;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/en\/who-we-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenzia mondiale anti-doping<\/a><\/strong> (WADA) ha finanziato una ricerca su quanti partecipanti erano positivi ai test nei campionati mondiali organizzati durante l&#8217;anno dall&#8217;Associazione internazionale di atletica (IAAF). The agency said track and field\u2019s world governing body needed to review the findings first, the researchers said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nel<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/culture-media-and-sport-committee\/news-parliament-2015\/chairs-statement-blood-doping-15-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settembre scorso<\/a><\/strong>, la commissione sul doping (CMS) del Parlamento britannico ne pubblica la <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/documents\/commons-committees\/culture-media-and-sport\/WADA's-athlete-doping-prevalence-survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bozza finale<\/a><\/strong>, meno i &#8220;supplementary materials&#8221;. In dicembre Sebastian Coe, il presidente dell&#8217;IAAF, protesta e\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/culture-media-and-sport-committee\/news-parliament-2015\/blood-doping-evidence-lord-coe-15-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dice<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0al Comitato che la ricerca \u00e8 penosa, tant&#8217;\u00e8 che almeno otto riviste l&#8217;avevano rifiutata.<\/p>\n<p>A gennaio, appoggiato dal suo rettore, il principale autore Rolf Ulrich dell&#8217;universit\u00e0 di Tubinga, si <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/documents\/commons-committees\/culture-media-and-sport\/Correspondence\/Letter-from-University-of-Tubingen-regarding-blood-doping-11-January-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incavola<\/a><\/strong>. This data has been requested.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Non si capisce perch\u00e9 l&#8217;IAAF dovrebbe sottoscrivere una ricerca chiesta e finanziata da un&#8217;agenzia che si dichiara indipendente. Al posto degli autori metterei tutto su BioRXiv e avviserei la Science Integrity Initiative, cos\u00ec potrebbe mandare un com. stampa ai cronisti sportivi&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Altra sorpresona, l&#8217;Agenzia anti-doping russa avrebbe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsintegrityinitiative.com\/rusada-may-have-manipulated-doping-test-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;<\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsintegrityinitiative.com\/rusada-may-have-manipulated-doping-test-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manipolato&#8221; i dati<\/a>: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) appears to have manipulated figures concerning the number of doping tests it conducted in 2009, 2010 and 2011, according to analysis of the agency\u2019s annual reports. The figures reported by RUSADA suggest that it increased the number of tests it conducted by an exact number each year, from exactly 14,500 in 2009 to 15,000 in 2010 and 20,000 in 2011. The World Anti-Doping Code required such figures to be sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on an annual basis. WADA did not\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wada-main-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/wada-independent-commission-terms-of-reference-2015-jan-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begin investigating<\/a>\u00a0RUSADA until December 2014, and did not investigate the testing figures provided within RUSADA\u2019s annual reports.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><b>And a pony<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/william-happer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Happer<\/a><\/strong>, il fisico caro al <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatemonitor.it\/?p=24873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ten. col.
