Questa volta il favore va agli antivaccinisti.\u00a0Una brevissima nota su una delle peer reviewer,\u00a0qui<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dora si riferisce all’articolo <\/a><\/strong>“Vaccination and Health Outcomes: A Survey of 6- to 12-year-old Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Children based on Mothers\u2019 Reports” e all’entusiasmo che la correlazione trovata dagli autori tra vaccinazioni e maggiore incidenza di allergie e di “NDDs (defined as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and\/or a learning disability)” ha suscitato nel movimento anti-vax anglofono.<\/p>\n

Bench\u00e9 pagato all’editore per essere in open access, dal 21 novembre si pu\u00f2 leggere soltanto l’abstract (1)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mi sembra strana la scelta di sondare unicamente le madri che non<\/strong> mandano i figli a scuola in quattro stati americani di cui uno, l’Oregon, ha un indice di “buona salute”, di copertura assicurativa, di campagne di informazione e prevenzione, e un reddito pro capite pi\u00f9 alti della Florida, e molto pi\u00f9 alti della Louisiana e del Mississippi. Per citare solo alcune delle variabili da controllare per rendere significativa una statistica su campione cos\u00ec piccolo.<\/p>\n

L’abstract \u00e8 un po’ frustrante. Non spiega l’accorpamento tra le molte varianti dell’autismo e dell’ADHD con “e\/o \u00a0disabilit\u00e0 dell’apprendimento” (quali?) o come mai le opinioni delle madri di 666 bambini di cui un 39% non vaccinati (39<\/a><\/strong>%?), gi\u00e0 “aggiustate” (come e per quali variabili?) siano poi filtrate da “un modello finale aggiustato” (idem?) ecc.<\/p>\n

Insomma se fossi una Gioia Locati<\/a><\/strong>, prima di esultare aspetterei di vedere se il testo risponde – per esempio – alle domande di Tim Richter-Heitmann\u00a0(terzo commento) sotto l’abstract. Anche perch\u00e9 il primo autore\u00a0Anthony R. Mawson<\/a><\/strong> \u00e8 un ammiratore<\/a><\/strong> delle frodi di Andrew Wakefield e la ricerca \u00e8 stata finanziata da Generation Rescue, un’associazione di complottisti anti-vax e anti-scienza in generale.<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Background: Vaccinations have prevented millions of infectious illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths among US children. Yet the long-term health outcomes of the routine vaccination program remain unknown. Studies have been recommended by the Institute of Medicine to address this question.<\/p>\n

Specific Aims: To compare vaccinated and unvaccinated children on a broad range of health outcomes, and to determine whether an association found between vaccination and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), if any, remains significant after adjustment for other measured factors.<\/p>\n

Design: A cross-sectional survey of mothers of children educated at home.
\nMethods: Homeschool organizations in four states (Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oregon) were asked to forward an email to their members, requesting mothers to complete an anonymous online questionnaire on the vaccination status and health outcomes of their biological children ages 6 to 12.<\/p>\n

Results: A total of 415 mothers provided data on 666 children, of which 261 (39%) were unvaccinated. Vaccinated children were significantly less likely than the unvaccinated to have been diagnosed with chickenpox and pertussis, but significantly more likely to have been diagnosed with pneumonia, otitis media, allergies and NDDs (defined as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and\/or a learning disability). After adjustment, the factors that remained significantly associated with NDD were vaccination (OR 3.1, 95% CI: 1.4, 6.8), male gender (OR 2.3, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.3), and preterm birth (OR 5.0, 95% CI: 2.3, 11.6). In a final adjusted model, vaccination but not preterm birth remained associated with NDD, while the interaction of preterm birth and vaccination was associated with a 6.6-fold increased odds of NDD (95% CI: 2.8, 15.5).<\/p>\n

Conclusions: In this study based on mothers\u2019 reports, the vaccinated had a higher rate of allergies and NDD than the unvaccinated. Vaccination, but not preterm birth, remained significantly associated with NDD after controlling for other factors. However, preterm birth combined with vaccination was associated with an apparent synergistic increase in the odds of NDD. Further research involving larger, independent samples is needed to verify and understand these unexpected findings in order to optimize the impact of vaccines on children\u2019s health.<\/p>\n
