Texas still has one of the highest vaccination rates for childhood diseases overall, 97.4%,\u00a0according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. But the number of children not vaccinated because of their parents’ \u201cpersonal beliefs\u201d\u2014as opposed to medical reasons\u2014has risen from 2300 in 2003, when such exemptions were introduced, to more than 44,000 so far this year, according to numbers prepared by The Immunization Partnership based on Texas Department of State Health Services data. The actual number may be much higher because an estimated 300,000 Texan children are schooled at home, says Susan\u00a0Wootton, an infectious disease pediatrician at the University of Texas in Houston; though the law requires these kids to be immunized too, parents don’t need to submit proof of vaccination.<\/p>\n

[…] Then there\u2019s the Seasteading Institute, a political project of Silicon Valley\u2019s chief cryptofascist, Peter Thiel. Seasteaders seek to construct \u201cfloating communities<\/a>\u00a0in the ocean based on the principles of contract and radical consent\u201d \u2014\u00a0Burning Man meets\u00a0Waterworld<\/i>.<\/p>\n
