Altro esperimento di elettroni onda e particelle dopo Young (1803), Merli, Missiroli, Pozzi (1976), votato nel 2002 “il più nell’esperimento nella storia della fisica” ecc. La differenza è che questo segue alla lettera il metodo Feynman per inseguire un elettrone per volta; la somiglianza è che quelli dell’American Physics Society continuano a chiamare “Guilio” il prof. Pozzi.

Stando ai nuovi dati di Atlas e Cms presentati all’incontro di Moriond, l’Higgs è un po’ più certo, dice il com. stampa del CERN. Grazie, ma lo sapevano già tutti. Marco che è andato a sciare alla conferenza Higgs Quo Vadis di Aspen, Colorado, invece che a La Thuile (Italia), ne aveva parlato l’altro ieri.

Nel dicembre scorso, il chirurgo cinese Rongxiang Xu, che vive a Los Angeles ed è il titolare della MEBO, ha fatto causa al comitato Nobel del Karolinska, per non avergli assegnato il premio al posto di John Gurdon e Shinya Yamanaka, esponendolo così “al disprezzo e al ridicolo”. Sua versione – e cronologia – della scoperta delle staminali “indotte” derivate da cellule adulte.  Da The Scientist:

Xu’s son says his father did not submit his results to mainstream peer-reviewed journals because “he did not want to spend a lot of time writing articles for publication.” Xu did, however, publish in a journal he edits, called The Chinese Journal of Burns Wounds & Surface Ulcers, and with two other doctors, he wrote a book on MEBO techniques in 2004.

at least one US company sees promise in Xu’s treatments.  Botanical drug development company Skingenix, also based in Los Angeles, is sponsoring Phase II clinical trials to test whether MEBO products help heal foot ulcers and burns. These studies are not designed to shed light on whether MEBO and stem cells share anything in common…

Skingenix sponsorizza un esperimento clinico che non può gettare luce sulle proprietà comuni tra cellule staminali o meno e il prodotto da testare:  si tratta di un unguento derivato dalla medicina cinese, a base di sostanze vegetali.
Il 22 febbraio, il Karolinska ha chiesto al tribunale federale dismettere la causa, “per futili motivi”.

Il Karolinska annunciava i risultati di una ricerca, usciti sul JAMA questa settimana, durata 11 anni su 23.355 uomini:

The results of the study indicate that men who take vitamin C supplements (typically 1000 mg per tablet) are twice as likely to develop kidney stones as men who do not take any dietary supplements. The risk was also found to increase with the frequency of vitamin C supplement use. The regular use of multivitamins was not found to be associated with the risk of kidney stones.
The researchers believe that both the dose and combination of nutrients with which the vitamin C is ingested are important. For this reason, the observed increase in risk does not apply to a normal dietary intake of vitamin C from fruit and vegetables. In Sweden, the RDI for vitamin C is 75 mg; the vitamin C content of supplements is commonly 1,000 mg per tablet, which is a considerably higher dose than which is obtained through food.

Stesso tema, altre bestiole. Su Scientific Reports – una rivista open access del gruppo Nature – esce “Bed bugs evolved unique adaptive strategy to resist pyrethroid insecticides”. Con poche mutazioni, in 21 popolazioni campionate a Cincinnati la cimice (Cimex lectularius) s’è fatta un secondo filtro anti-piretroide nella cuticola e un sacco di enzimi che ne degradano le tossine.
