Il nuovo lavoro di Sua Signoria

(Documento in cui Sua Signoria Lord Christopher Monckton, terzo visconte di Brenchley, sia falsario che impostore, accusa il Potus di essere un falsario e un impostore poiché sarebbe nato in Kenya e avrebbe truccato il certificato di nascita rilasciato dall’anagrafe delle Hawaii.)

Il “caso Willie Soon” continua a fare l’onda.

Sul Guardian Graham Redfearn indaga – insieme al gruppo di DesmogBlog e al Climate Investigations Center – su come se la passano 12 lobbisti assoldati da Big Oil & Coal nel 1998 per negare l’effetto serra dei gas serra.

In generale, molto bene. Per esempio, il solerte Steve Milloy, ora dirigente della Murray “Big Coal” Energy e molto ammirato dal ten.col. Guidi, ha un segretario che risponde al posto suo:

Emails to Milloy and Murray Energy went unanswered. The Guardian received a response to the email addressed to Mr Milloy from Lord Christopher Monckton, a prominent climate science sceptic, who said it was “untrue” and “statistically meaningless” to claim the 15 hottest years on record had occurred from 1998 onwards.

Il Climate Investigations Center pubblica il com. stampa di tre senatori democratici, il facsimile della lettera che hanno spedito a 100 Big Oil & Coal:

The letters from Senators Markey, Boxer and Whitehouse ask the companies and other organizations about any funded research efforts related to climate change and the wide range of related issues over the last ten years. The letters also ask for the names of researchers, whether restrictions or terms were put on the requests, and results from the agreements including any publications or other materials.

Motivo:

“For years we’ve known that fossil fuel interests have sought to block action on climate change and have denied the science. This investigation will help to determine who is funding these denial-for-hire operations and whether those who are funded by these fossil fuel interests are keeping their funders’ identities secret from the public and legislators,” said Senator Markey, Ranking Member of the Superfund, Waste Management, and Regulatory Oversight Subcommittee on the Environment and Public Works Committee. “Corporate special interests shouldn’t be able to secretly peddle the best junk science money can buy.”
“We’ve known for many years that the tobacco industry supported phony science claiming that smoking does not cause cancer. Now it’s time for the fossil fuel industry to come clean about funding climate change deniers,” said Senator Boxer, Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Meglio tardi, ma non capisco perché non chiedano anche i documenti relativi ai fondi versati da Big Oil& Coal ai politici per difenderne la libertà di inquinare.

C’è chi inquina l’informazione e c’è chi cerca di bloccarla alla fonte. Il 5 febbraio scorso, il prof. Mario Saad dell’università di Campinas a São Paulo, ha fatto causa all’American Diabetes Association ADA), l’editore della rivista Diabetes

(1) requiring the ADA to remove the digital expression of concern that was published on the Diabetes website;
(2) enjoining the ADA from publishing the hard-copy expression of concern in the March print issue of Diabetes; and
(3) enjoining the ADA from retracting Dr. Saad’s four articles from Diabetes.

Gli è andata male. Con una rapidità che stupirà gli italiani, il giudice della corte federale di Boston ha pubblicato la sentenza il 18 febbraio: le richieste del prof. Saad violano la libertà di parola garantita dal primo emendamento della Costituzione statunitense. Secondo i suoi avvocati, invece,

[it] has permitted the journal Diabetes to continue to defame Dr. Saad, his co-authors, and the University of Campinas in São Paolo, Brazil, by questioning the reliability of the data in the articles, while at the same time ignoring the findings of the university that there was no evidence of dishonesty on the part of Dr. Saad.

Retraction Watch aveva già parlato dei pareri opposti dati dall’università e dall’ADA sulle pubblicazioni del prof. Saad. In Brasile, alcuni quotidiani la pensano come l’ADA.
Ora su PubPeer, i paper “dubbi” del gruppo di Saad  sono 17. L’università ha nominato una seconda commissione d’indagine, questa volta di esperti esterni, che concluderà i lavori entro metà marzo. Nel frattempo ha vietato ai propri ricercatori di sottoporre articoli alla rivista

A proposito delle bufale moltiplicate dagli scienziati cristiani su “Fusione fredda” nei loro “impegni di divulgazione scientifica”, ai difensori dei fatti segnalo le tre scelte elencate da Paul  Krugman:

1. Continue to write and speak as if we were still having a genuine intellectual dialogue, in the hope that politeness and persistence will make the pretense come true.

Difficile con chi ritiene che l’onestà intellettuale sia “roba da preti”.

2. Point out the wrongness, but quietly and politely. This has the virtue of being honest, and useful to anyone who reads it. But nobody will.

“Nessuno” è un po’ esagerato, nel caso di un premio Nobel. Visto il risultato di questo post, direi un lettore.

3. Point out the wrongness in ways designed to grab readers’ attention — with ridicule where appropriate, with snark, and with names attached. This will get read; it will get you some devoted followers, and a lot of bitter enemies. One thing it won’t do, however, is change any of those closed minds. (…)
It really would be nice not having to do things this way. But that’s the world we live in — and, as I said, there’s some compensation in the fact that one can have a bit of fun doing it.
