Purtroppo, l’Ordine dei Medici della Valle d’Aosta, che ieri per bocca del suo presidente aveva criticato l’iniziativa dell’assessorato regionale della Sanità, oggi ha fatto retromarcia.

Il presidente ci ha ripensato. Credeva di essere stato intervistato sulla “medicina” antisemita del pluriomicida Hamer. Invece la “medicina quantica” – inventata dalla dott. E.F. Poli di cui dice di non sapere nulla – sarebbe una

disciplina estremamente interessante sviluppata da un medico e un fisico quantistico di fama mondiale e che considera il nostro cervello come una sorta di “computer biologico”, equipaggiato con una rete di informazione sinaptica composta da più di 100 miliardi di neuroni e la nostra esperienza di coscienza come risultato dell’interazione tra le informazioni quantiche e i microtubuli delle cellule.

Non è una disciplina, ma l’ipotesi – poi detta “Orch OR qubit–Orchestrated objective reduction” – avanzata dall’anestesista Stuart Hameroff nei primi anni Ottanta, poi elaborata dal matematico-fisico Roger Penrose in due libri degli anni Novanta: La nuova mente dell’Imperatore e Ombre della mente.

In sintesi, la gravità quantistica su scala di Planck – che è tuttora priva di una teoria – farebbe vibrare i qbit d’informazione nei microtubuli del bio-computer che abbiamo nel cranio, e da queste vibrazioni emergerebbe la coscienza.

H&P prendono per realtà l’analogia semplicistica tra computer e cervello-mente. Succede spesso ai teorici che hanno poca familiarità con la biologia, ben più pasticciata (“messy”) dei loro modelli. Da 15 anni si sa quanto sia stata ingannevole, e dannosa, l’analogia tra DNA e codice informatico, ma la lezione non è servita.
Dopo vari aggiustamenti ad hoc, in un numero speciale della rivista Physics in Life Reviews del 2014 Hameroff e Penrose hanno festeggiato il ventennale della Orch OR ripetendo che avevano ragione loro: i microtubuli vibrano. Nel cervello vibrano e quindi “trasmettono” energia/informazione solo quelli perché il resto è isolato? E impermeabile alla gravità quantistica? Ecc. ecc. 

Nonostante i proclami dei suoi fautori, l’implausibile Orch OR suscita poco interesse fra i neuroscienziati e, da quello che ho visto, fra gli scienziati tout court. (Btw, su Nature, Koch è più diplomatico di Crick che ne diceva di peggio. Penrose è sempre stimolante e di persona è simpaticissimo, ma è anche famoso per prendere cantonate.)

Di medicina quantica e delle sue auto-guarigioni per ora parlano unicamente i ciarlatani™. Il dott. Rosset non sembra farne parte né sembra aver letto le tesi di H&P e gli argomenti dei loro critici. Nel caso volesse informarsi, la collega Silvia Savoye (brava) potrebbe suggerirgli di iniziare da qui.

Aggiornamento. La Bacterix Worldwide LLC di Ruggiero è stata chiusa una settimana fa per evasione fiscale.

Il sito web promotore dello yogurt “bravousa.com” è stato visto per l’ultima volta il 2 ottobre, ma nei 15 giorni successivi a un certo punto è svanito.

    The accidental failure to cite the original source in the Encyclopedia entry deprives readers of the opportunity to check the paper in question, and to discover that <A href="http://retractionwatch.com/2011/12/02/following-investigation-u-ottawa-lab-retracting-four-papers-in-the-journal-of-biological-chemistry/"it was retracted in 2011 on account of manipulated data — the claims it makes are not substantiated.

    Well, it looks like editorial supervision at the Encyclopedia of Cancer is a bit inattentive.
    I wonder if the problem concerns only the entries written by Ruggiero.

    Since you ask…
    The 2015 revision of the Encyclopedia of Cancer is still the 3rd Edition, but there have been a few cosmetic changes. The entry on Bcl-2, for instance, has gained a second author, John W. Anderson.
    Now Anderson is not a scientist or researcher as far as I’m aware; he runs the Isagenyx pyramid scheme multi-level-marketing operation to sell supplements and weight-loss pills. Part of that operation is his “Dream Master Laboratory”* — Ruggiero’s and Anderson’s affiliation for the Bcl-2 entry — which was employing Ruggiero in 2015, while Anderson’s address was used to register Ruggiero’s now-defunct yogurt-distribution company “Bacterix LLC”.
    I use the past tense here, because Ruggiero’s stint as “Director of Research. Dream Master LLC” has finished, according to his latest CV.
    Anyway, it is not clear to me what actual contributions Anderson made to this 2015 updated entry (other than provide Ruggiero with employment and accommodation), and I am concerned that this is a case of “gift authorship” or “courtesy authorship”, which are no longer well-regarded in modern academic standards.
    * Evidently a plant-extract importation company rather than an actual laboratory

    It seems to be a legacy. Ruggiero provided a shorter and largely uncontentious entry for the first edition in 2001 (when it was still the “Encyclopedic Reference of Cancer”). In the 2008 2nd Edition he revised the entry to include a homage to Duesberg’s work, and indeed Duesberg’s text.
    Then the 3rd Edition gained the speculations (and repurposed) text about HIV and VPR curing cancer; and the advertisement for GcMAF.
    There is a 2016 4th Edition but details of the contributors do not seem to be available yet.
