La CFS, una spin-off del MIT
has attracted $50 million from Italian energy giant ENI, and plans to invest $30 million of that sum in research and development at MIT over the next three years.
L’investimento dovrebbe suscitare l’interesse e ulteriori finanziamenti del governo sperano i fondatori dell’azienda, tutti con dottorati (veri) e anni di ricerca alle spalle. Dicono che un prototipo del reattore SPARC produrrà elettricità entro 15 anni. Dal com. stampa del MIT:

Quarant’anni fa, un neo-laureato in filosofia inventava un metodo per trasformare i rifiuti in petrolio. Dopo aver tentato invano di piazzarlo in altri paesi, nel 1982 firmava con l’ENI l’accordo commerciale per sfruttare il metodo in tutto il mondo. Dopo un anno e mezzo di esperimenti, i tecnici dell’ENI concludevano che
la scadente qualità dei liquidi prodotti ne rende problematico l’utilizzo senza ulteriori e costosi trattamenti, inoltre la presenza di composti clorurati rende improponibile la possibilità di impiego nei forni industriali.
Così sono arrivati finanziamenti pubblici, Andrea Rossi si è trasformato in Sceicco della Brianza e parte della Brianza in discarica.

Questa settimana l’Economist celebra le nuove tecnologie con le quali saranno sfruttate le risorse degli oceani; da accompagnare a “Protect the neglected half of our blue planet” su Nature un mese fa, in cui Glen Wright et al. spiegano come quelle risorse vengono devastate in assenza di accordi internazionali.
Su Nature Communications, Amanda Dawson e altri ricercatori australiani scrivono di aver sottoposto l’Euphausia superba, il krill antartico, a una dieta di
PE [polietilene] microbeads (27–32µm diameter) along with an algal food source to determine the fate of microplastics ingested by a planktonic crustacean of high dietary flexibility and ecological importance.
Dopo cinque giorni in vasca senza plastica, avevano eliminato le microsfere sotto forma di nanosfere:
We examine exposed krill and their faecal material microscopically to (1) quantify the size of particles present in the krill digestive system and in egested material, (2) identify where these particles are localised within the digestive system, and (3) examine the effect of particle size on egestion. We find that Antarctic krill are capable of fragmenting pristine PE microbeads into significantly smaller fragments, showing that nanoplastics can be generated by the ingestion of microplastics in a marine species.

Unfortunately, Dawson said, krill were unlikely to provide a solution to the levels of plastics and microplastics polluting the oceans. “It’s not necessarily helping plastic pollution, it’s just changing it to make it easier for small animals to eat it,” she said. “It could be a new source of plastics for the deep ocean.”
Il Guardian ne conclude che nell’Oceano meridionale le balene non mangeranno gamberetti infarciti di microsfere. Anche perché prima di evacuare nanosfere, capita al krill di essere pompato dalla superficie per fornire mangime agli allevamenti ittici o per estrarne gli omega 3 e altri lipidi che, stando alle réclame,
favoriscono la regolare funzionalità dell’apparato cardiovascolare, il controllo dei lipidi plasmatici (trigliceridi), influiscono sulla funzione cognitiva, sul processo visivo e sostengono la mobilità articolare.
Evidenza per ora: nessuna, nemmeno come “approccio complementare alla salute“.

It also gives readers the spectacle of a professor at one of the world’s great universities treating serious thinkers with populist contempt. The genre it most closely resembles, with its breezy style, bite-size chapters, and impressive visuals, is not 18th-century philosophie so much as a genre in which Pinker has had copious experience: the TED Talk (although in this case, judging by the book’s audio version, a TED Talk that lasts 20 hours).
