Sui PNAS, Lee Hannah et al. pubblicano in open access per puro sadismo “Climate Change, Wine Production and Conservation“. Sempre buona, l’oca si limita a dire che la ricerca contraddice l’ottimismo rosé del prof. Luigi Mariani, che pubblica anche lui in open access ma su Climate Monitor.

Su Nature Climate Change, Paul Williams e Manoy Joshi scrivono:

Atmospheric turbulence causes most weather-related aircraft incidents… Here we show using climate model simulations that clear-air turbulence changes significantly within the transatlantic flight corridor when the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is doubled. At cruise altitudes within 50–75°?N and 10–60°?W in winter, most clear-air turbulence measures show a 10–40% increase in the median strength of turbulence and a 40–170% increase in the frequency of occurrence of moderate-or-greater turbulence. Our results suggest that climate change will lead to bumpier transatlantic flights by the middle of this century.

Virginie Guemas et al. cercano di risollevare il morale con delle retro-proiezioni. Grazie agli oceani tropicali  che assorbono più energia del previsto, negli scorsi dieci anni, la tendenza dell’aumento del risc glob ha rallentato:

The top-of-atmosphere net energy input remained in the [0.5–1]Wm2 interval during the past decade, which is successfully captured by our predictions. Most of this excess energy was absorbed in the top 700m of the ocean at the onset of the warming pause, 65% of it in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Aggiunt. 10/4: oggi La Repubblica sembra credere che il riscaldamento si è fermato del tutto, che la temperatura alla superficie di cui parla la prima frase dell’abstract, quella in mare fino a 700m e in troposfera siano la stessa cosa. Eppure Michele Brunetti ricorda che i 10 anni più caldi registrati dall’800 sono concentrati dal 1998  in poi e i grafici sono giusti.

Succede nell’area di Swansea, in Galles. Al 5 aprile scorso erano circa 600 i nuovi casi di morbillo segnalati. I medici della zona dichiarano di aspettarsi circa 20 nuovi casi al giorno ma, sorpresa sorpresa, la percentuale di infezioni nei bambini fra gli 8 e i 16 anni è molto bassa, mentre per quelli sotto gli 8 anni è altissima. Mistero? Assolutamente no. Fra i bambini sotto gli 8 anni in quella zona c’è infatti un ‘altissima percentuale di non vaccinati (per il vaccino trivalente, morbillo-parotite-rosolia). E perché? Perché, specialmente nel Regno Unito ma no solo, da circa un decennio esiste un forte movimento anti-vaccinista innescato dallo studio truffaldino di Andrew Wakefield, ex-medico inglese che ha insinuato che quel vaccino potesse causare l’autismo.

Scappato dalla Gran Bretagna, Wakefield si arricchisce negli Stati Uniti.  Per ora.

Sul Telegraph, Susan Greenfield pare averne combinata un’altra delle sue.
I PNAS anticipano anche la scoperta dell’acqua calda,”Penis size interacts with body shape and height to influence male attractiveness”. In sostanza:

Positive linear selection was detected for penis size, but the marginal increase in attractiveness eventually declined with greater penis size (i.e., quadratic selection).

Per la discussione, accomodarsi da Science now. Anche solo per ammirare l’incipit.

La “pseudo-accademia” dell’editoria predona
Gina Kolata ne parla sul New York Times, 

Those scientists had stumbled into a parallel world of pseudo-academia, complete with prestigiously titled conferences and journals that sponsor them. Many of the journals and meetings have names that are nearly identical to those of established, well-known publications and events.
Steven Goodman, a dean and professor of medicine at Stanford and the editor of the journal Clinical Trials, which has its own imitators, called this phenomenon “the dark side of open access,” the movement to make scholarly publications freely available.
The number of these journals and conferences has exploded in recent years…
